Inspect Your Deck
This is the first step and a very important one when looking into doing any type of deck renovation. You should inspect the entire deck paying close attention to posts or joists that are level with the ground. You are ensuring the structural integrity of your deck and checking for rot. Use an awl or screwdriver and probe around the posts that either sit on concrete blocks or that touch the ground. If the wood seems soft it needs to be addressed. If there are just small areas of soft or rotten wood you can remove them and treat the area with a wood preservative. Anything bigger than your thumbnail may need to be completely replaced.
Install A Plywood Surface
The recommended substrate for installing Econodek vinyl decking is standard plywood, 3/4″, Tongue and Groove. Depending on the height of your deck boards and how much room you have under your door sill you may be able to skim or sheet your deck with 5/8″ plywood, T & G. If your deck boards are in good shape and you have space this is a great option. If not the deck boards will have to be removed and 3/4″ plywood will need to be installed on the joists.
